Green Smoke e Cig

Green Smoke e Cig

Pros:

The Green Smoke e Cigarette has awesome vapor production, solid batteries and chargers, good nicotine hit and 8 nicotine cartridge flavors available at all nicotine levels.

Cons:

Starter kits and batteries a little pricey (but backed by a solid 1-year warranty)

Bottom Line:

Tons of people are using the Green Smoke 2-piece electronic cigarette right now which resulted in many folks here suggesting I test out and review it so I finally caved and got the Basic Starter Kit.

I got a great first impression the moment I took my first drag and experienced its awesome vapor. With the 8 flavor sampler pack I bought, I was able to test all the flavors and expect them to be in stock at whatever nicotine level I wanted. The nicotine hit from the Green Smoke e cigarette was also very satisfying partly due to the fact that the 3 second automatic cut-off restarts immediately activating the atomizer again if you continue taking a drag. Finally, charging the batteries was a snap with very clear charging indicators and reliable chargers.

At first I thought that the only drawback to this unit was a slightly above average price that would have to be justified by performance.  But, then I realized that the price is actually quite reasonable considering batteries and chargers are backed by a solid 1 year warranty and good customer service.  This seems to be a theme among Green Smoke Reviews on the internet, and nicotine cartridge price is also quite reasonable.

Anyway, there are few issues you will find in my Green Smoke Review, and overall its a good unit. I review too may electronic cigarettes to accurately gauge the longevity of the Green Smoke batteries, but the 1 year warranty and 30-day money back guarantee makes giving it a shot virtually risk-free so if you think Green Smoke is your choice then go for it!

Overall Rating: 3.9 (above average)

Cartridge Rating = 3.5

The starter kit came with 5 tobacco flavored medium strength cartridges that each lasted almost as long as a real pack of cigarettes giving me about 200-250 puffs on average. Depending on your habits you may have a different experience.

There are eight flavors to choose from including chocolate, coffee, menthol, regular (tobacco), Marlboro, vanilla, apple and strawberry. All flavors are available in all 5 strengths (nice to see) which include 0mg, 4mg, 6mg, 8mg, and 16mg.

Note: I bought the 8 cartridge sampler pack (1 of each flavor) for my Green Smoke Review and I highly recommend it. The flavor and harshness varies by nicotine strength though, but it at least gives you a feel for all the flavors.

The nicotine hit is good, with a little less throat sensation from the smoother vapor. For this reason I suggest most just go with the 16mg strength. The directions say this is equivalent to an unfiltered cigarette. I think there is less taste and harshness is, and the nicotine hit is definitely NOT as intense as a real unfiltered cigarette.

Overall, Green Smoke e cig cartridges were great with most flavors having a good rich & smooth flavor lasting about as long or longer than most of the 2 piece e cigs out there. The only problem I experienced is that a few cartridges I tried seemed to have a very hard draw. This was more of a nuisance than anything, but not a deal breaker. Also, 2 piece e cig cartridges are harder to drip, and voids the warranty with Green Smoke anyway.

Stronger nicotine levels or a more refill friendly cartridge / policy would have improved the cartridge rating, but they are still above average.

Atomizer Rating = 4.5

The atomizer is built into the cartridges on this unit since it is a 2 piece design. This keeps maintenance to a minimum and also makes it the easiest to use. You simply remove the rubber covers from the cartridge and screw it onto the battery and you are ready to go.

Every time you replace a cartridge you replace the atomizer with a brand new fresh atomizer. You can easily switch between flavors without worry of on flavor bleeding into another because each cartridge has its own dedicated atomizer.

The 2 air holes that feed the atomizer are near the tip of the battery on this unit which is probably one factor that contributes to the medium to hard draw.

Other than that, the atomizer scores very high on this unit because of the inherit advantages of having the atomizer built into the replacement nicotine cartridges.

Vapor Production = 4.0

As stated previously the vapor I got from this product while working on my Green Smoke review was great. Based on sheer volume it is one of the best performers I have ever seen in this category.

Why didn’t I give it a 5 then? Well, this is because I did experience some inconsistency with the vapor production particularly near the end of a cartridge. The vapor really dwindled for the last 50 puffs or so. I was able to change the cartridge early to get back into vapor heaven as most people would probably do, but since I am reviewing the product I need to smoke the cartridges until the vapor is virtually non-existent or just plain unacceptable.

When the vapor dwindles towards the end I was able to take longer slower drags and also prime the atomizer on occasion to get perfectly acceptable vapor. It was just nowhere near the vapor you get with a fresh cartridge and a fully charged battery.

Batteries & Charger Rating = 4.0

By far, the best thing about the Green Smoke e cigarette battery though is the instant restart on the automatic cut-off switch. This allowed me to take a nice 3 second drag before the automatic cut-off would kick in and the lighted tip would dim. But, then I could keep dragging and the light would come right back on, almost instantly letting me take another 3 second drag and another and another… Hmm… Maybe this is why the vapor would dwindle on me towards the end of a cartridge.

Also, the charging indicators on the battery chargers were very clear and reliable with a single LED that would light red continuously while charging and then turn green when the battery is fully charged. The red LED on the AC wall adapter is only to indicate that the wall adapter has power.

This basic starter kit comes with 2 batteries: one regular capacity and one slightly longer high capacity battery. The regular capacity battery (when new) usually didn’t have a problem lasting until the cartridge was empty (200-250 puffs). The high capacity batter gave me between 25 and 50 more puffs.

The regular battery consistently took about 3 hours to charge while the high capacity battery takes about 4 hours whether plugging the USB charger into a computer or the AC wall adapter.

Green Smoke warns against overcharging their batteries so when the light on the USB charger turns green you should remove the battery from the charger as soon as possible and not leave the battery un-attended while charging.

I was very pleased with the battery and chargers while examining them for my Green Smoke review although they are a little pricey and slow to charge.

Overall the instant restart on the automatic cut-off and the simplicity / reliability of the batteries and chargers is where GreenSmoke stands out, but an option for a different color light on the tip would have improved the rating here.

Construction / Quality Rating = 4.0

Fit of the battery in the cartridge and the chargers is excellent, but not perfect. There was a teeny tiny amount of wobble in the “roll” test I do to check fit of battery into cartridge.

I didn’t have any batteries / cartridge / charger failures, but just some inconsistencies in the smoking experience between cartridges and batteries including varying draw, vapor and cartridge life.

The finish of the batteries is a durable semi-gloss with the fine gold banding / pin stripes going around the body that you see on a lot of 2 piece designs these days. The color of all of the flavor options seemed to complement the finish nicely.

Cost / Value Rating = 3.5

I actually bought this unit myself for this Green Smoke review (although GreenSmoke did offer to send me a free sample after the fact) so I can tell you first hand that it is not the cheapest, but it is also not the most expensive electronic cigarette I have seen either.

Overall I think Greensmoke does have an edge in performance and reliability that is reflected in the overall rating, and the price of the starter kit isn’t that bad considering. But, $50 each for extra batteries? I know these batteries are sophisticated and have a microchip in them, but so does a cheap wristwatch!

Sorry for my rant. It really isn’t warranted. Many other 2-piece e-cig vendors are selling extra batteries for $50 dollars or more and I have pondered the $50 battery question many times. Let me explain…

Green Smoke also offers a 1 year warranty which includes batteries. I haven’t seen many electronic cigarette batteries last longer than a year. Lithium ion batteries can typically only be charged about 300 times before performance becomes unacceptable. It isn’t that hard for an avid e cig smoker to charge a batter that many times is less than one year. So, e-cig companies that offer a 1 year warranty that also want to stay profitable need to plan on 1-2 warranty replacements of each battery.

Hopefully, Green Smoke is good about replacing batteries under warranty. I believe the will be considering the good experience I had with their customer service if you read the section I wrote on customer service.  It’s actually somewhat nice to know that you don’t have to pay for batteries out of your pocket while yours are still under warranty.

Style and Extra Features

The GreenSmoke electronic cigarette simply looks very much like a regular cigarette so it will not change or affect your style much. The most notable difference is that their batteries have a light green plastic tips installed. The plastic is green when not lit yet lights up totally orange when you take a drag. I think this effect is kinda cool, but the green plastic tip will be a matter of preference to most people.

Green smoke shipped the original gray plastic “ash” tips with the starter kit I got, but you can’t switch them out. Trust me, I tried mainly for my Green Smoke review, but then I read somewhere that they aren’t meant to be removed, they are simply included in case a tip falls off and needs to be replaced. I can’t see them falling off though; they are glued on very securely.

I really like the dual Green Smoke electronic cigarette carrying case (sold separately) pictured above because with the basic starter kit you can fit 2 batteries and 3 cartridges. This is enough for almost 2 days of smoking with my habit!

Customer Service

While ordering the starter kit for this Green Smoke review, I found customer service to be extremely helpful and responsive. I had some trouble using a coupon code I found that I was sure was good, so I called and got a person on the phone right away.

They helped me with my problem (something I did) and then offered to take my order over the phone if I was still having trouble. I declined because I got the order to go through on-line. I then got a follow up phone call from them a couple hours later to ensure that I got an order confirmation e-mail and that I didn’t have any other problems, questions or needs.

They had no idea I was ordering their starter kit to write this review. Granted I don’t know if they would be as helpful if you needed to exchange one of those $50 batteries. . I hope so!

Just bought one of these and am waiting for it to come in the mail. But I have one question for you. When you say “due to the fact that the 3 second automatic cut-off restarts immediately activating the atomizer again if you continue taking a drag” do you mean you can keep dragging. Or have to stop sucking and then keep going. Hope it’s not to small of a question. Just interested is all.

    • Sparky says:

If memory serves me correctly, it should reactivate if you keep the same drag. I think I may have had to increase the strength of my drag in a few cases.

      THANKS FOR YOU COMMENT!!

  2. Cappy says:

Is this just a re-packaged Red Dragon? I’ve currently got the Red Dragon but am looking for a bigger vapor hit and battery quality (while their customer service is excellent I’ve already returned 5 batteries in less than a year)

    • Sparky says:

No. There are differences in the hardware for sure. The vapor and nicotine hit were similar though. I can’t remember which offered a higher cart strength though I would tend to lean towards that one if you are looking for a bigger nic hit.
